Understanding the lingo
The credit clearance industry is full of complicated, overlapping and often confusing terminology. Here is a quick overview of the terms that may be used on your credit record, and what it means:
Blacklisted
Simply put, being blacklisted means that lenders view you as a risky borrower and won't lend you money because you haven't paid back previous debts. Even if you pay off the debts that caused you to be blacklisted, your credit report will still show this negative mark for at least two to five years. To clear your credit report sooner, you'll need to go through a credit clearance process.
Accounts in arrears
If you have accounts in arrears, it means that some of your scheduled payments have not been made. But don't worry, no legal action has been taken against you yet. You can still talk to your credit providers directly to catch up with your payments and settle your debt. Just keep in mind that you might have to pay an administrative fine. And just so you know, you don't need to worry about credit clearance in this situation.
Accounts in default
'Accounts in default' means that your creditors have handed over your debt to attorneys. In basic terms, your creditors have lost faith in your ability to pay your debt and feel that it would cost them to much to recover it. This will reflect on your credit record for two years. Credit clearance will be required to removed this from your credit profile sooner.
Judgements
If you receive a judgement against you, it's because your creditors have taken legal action. If your debt is less than R100 000, the magistrate's court will handle it, but if it's more, it will go to the high court. It's important to know that this is a serious matter and will show up on your credit profile for up to 30 years if you don't pay it off. If you want to clear it sooner, you'll need to go through credit clearance.
When removing a judgement you have 3 options:
The first option would be settling the judgement outright. Once the judgement has been settled we will file a dispute with all the major credit bureaus for its removal from your credit profile. This process can take up to 2 months to complete. The timeline is dependent on how quickly the account is settled.
Administration order
If you're feeling overwhelmed by debt, an administration order could be a helpful solution. It's similar to debt review but has a limit to the amount of debt that can be put under administration. Choosing this option can help you get rid of garnishees from your salary, and it doesn't have to be a permanent fix. If your financial situation improves, like getting a raise, you can ask the court to remove the order from your record. If you want to speed up the process of clearing your credit profile, you'll need to look into credit clearance.
